Brown and Randle share CAMS F4 victories

Will Brown on his way to victory in the inaugural race of the CAMS Australian F4 Championship

Will Brown produced a faultless drive to take victory in the inaugural CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship at the Castrol Edge Townsville 400.

The AGI Sport driver inherited the lead on the opening lap when polesitter Jordan Lloyd handed him the advantage after running wide at Turn 2.

Brown then had to survive a Safety Car restart, caused when Jordan Love glanced the wall at Turn 6, before cruising to the chequered flag from the championship’s latest addition Nicholas Rowe.

The battle for third provided plenty of the entertainment during the 11 laps encounter but it was Formula Ford runner Luis Leeds, who managed to hold on to claim the final spot on the podium.

Jimmy Vernon had to settle for fourth with Lloyd fighting his way back to fifth at the chequered flag.

Thomas Randle also produced an impressive drive to finish sixth having been forced to start from the rear of the grid after his car breached technical regulations following Friday’s qualifying session.

Randle scored victory in an eventful Race 2 which ended in controversial circumstances.

Vernon had been in the control of the race from the start but was tagged by Randle shortly after the second restart on lap eight.

Randle was trying to fend off Lloyd for second but in doing so clipped the rear of Vernon which spun the AGI Sport driver out of the race.

Goddard collected Vernon which also ended his race prematurely.

The race was called following the incident with Randle taking the chequered flag from Lloyd and Rowe.

Hayek crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Brown, Ridge and Love.

The earlier Safety Car periods were caused by Frankie Maiolo, who twice came to halt on the circuit.

The CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship will return to action on Sunday for Race 3 scheduled to begin at 10:00.
