Aaron Cameron has become the first TCR Australia Series driver to dip into the 1:56s bracket around The Bend following second practice ahead of this weekend’s season finale.
Cameron topped the second 30-minute session of the day to lead Chris Pither (Garry Rogers Motorsport, Renault) by almost three tenths.
The Volkswagen Golf GTI driver recorded a 1:56.7517s, improving on Andre Heimgartner’s (Kelly Racing, Opel) 1:57.3180s from the day’s opening session.
Second fastest, Pither managed a 1:57.0396s lap in a session that saw 4.6401 seconds cover the 19 cars which made it out on track.
An engine problem in the opening session kept John Martin’s Honda Civic Type R in the shed.
“Looks like it’s had some sort of a bottom end problem, so as a precaution we’ll change it,” team boss David Wall told Speedcafe.com.
“Apart from that, no real signs prior to coming to that – upper lifeings on the car, it’s well under that so essentially it’s just one of those things.
“Tomorrow we’re going to start rear of grid anyway so we’ll put a plan together tonight once we know that everything’s okay.”
The session started with Mat Simmons (Milldun Motorsport, Subaru) having a spin shortly after leaving the pits, the debutant not the only driver to find himself pointing the wrong way as James Moffat (Garry Rogers Motorsport, Renault) also had a moment during the session.
Third fastest was Dylan O’Keeffe (Ash Seward, Alfa Romeo), a tenth down on Pither with Tony D’Alberto (Wall Racing, Honda) fourth with a 1:57.1353s.
Liam McAdam (Melbourne Performance Centre, Audi) rounded out the top five from Heimgartner, Jordan Cox (Garry Rogers Motorsport, Alfa Romeo), Nathan Morcom (HMO Customer Racing, Hyundai), James Allen (Ash Seward Motorsport, Alfa Romeo), and Will Brown (HMO Customer Racing Hyundai) in 10th.
The TCR Australia Series is next on track for qualifying on Saturday morning, scheduled for 0930 local time.
