This weekend will see high profile racing drivers from a variety of disciplines compete against the clock in Robbie McEwen’s Armor All Motorsport TT Cycling Challenge as a part of the Gold Coast Festival of Cycling event.
Reigning V8 Supercars champion Jamie Whincup, two-time World Superbike champion Troy Bayliss, Hyundai WRC test driver Chris Atkinson and Bathurst 1000 winner Will Davison are just some of the big names to contest the time trial.
With McEwen personally laying out the time trial track around the Gold Coast SUNS AFL team base at Metricon Stadium the stage is set to see which driver is considered the fastest rider.
“The Armor All Motorsport TT Challenge is shaping up to be a close battle as plenty of these drivers are very quick pedallers,” McEwen told Speedcafe.com.
“It’s going to be close but I reckon we might see Troy [Bayliss] or Atko [Chris Atkinson] take out the TT at Metricon Stadium but no doubt the V8 boys will give them a run for their money on Saturday.”
With the Bathurst 1000 just two weeks away, Ford Performance Racing driver Will Davison is looking forward to the weekend as a part of his training regimen for the enduro.
“When Robbie asked me to come up for the ride I was keen to jump on board as I’ll take any excuse to head up to the Gold Coast for some cycling,” said Davison.
“I like to do a couple of big, organised sporting events ahead of Bathurst as it really helps both mentally and physically in preparing for the big task ahead at the 1000.
“It’s magic weather up on the Gold Coast so it will be great to have those couple of hitouts on the weekend to help prepare for Bathurst and then the Armor All Gold Coast 600 soon after.”
Drivers will contest the time trial stage on Saturday before tackling the gruelling 117km Gran Fondo around the majestic Gold Coast hinterland.
