Josef Newgarden has taken pole position for the third-last race of the 2019 IndyCar season at Gateway, extending his series lead in the process.
Newgarden (#2 Team Penske Chevrolet) set a two-lap time of 48.255s at an average of 186.508mph (300.156km/h) to secure pole from Sebastien Bourdais (#18 DCR w/ Vasser-Sullivan Honda).
It’s the first pole position point for Newgarden since Sunday in Detroit, seven races ago, and his first on an oval in 2019.
Team Penske also locked out the second row with last-start winner Will Power (#12 Chevrolet) third and Simon Pagenaud (#22 Chevrolet) fourth.
While Pagenaud is set to start near the front, fellow championship contenders Scott Dixon and Alexander Rossi will be further back in the field.
Dixon (#9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda) was eighth and Rossi (#27 Andretti Autosport Honda) 11th.
The 248-lap race is scheduled to go green tomorrow at 1030 AEST.
