Bohud Racing capps off impressive debut season

THERE wasn’t a whole lot known about the Bohud Racing team heading into the 2022-23 season; however, by season’s end, they had well and truly made their mark on the 410 Sprintcar scene in their home state of NSW.

The Bohud Racing team was founded by Scott Jones, who has a long history being involved in speedway across a range of areas and always dreamed of setting up his own team. In early 2022, Jones made the decision to start up his own team and it was the birth of Bohud Racing.

Being a completely new team, the Bohud Racing team started from scratch and went out and set up the team by purchasing some top-shelf equipment from an interstate team. With all of the gear good to go, the team, which is based in Unanderra on the South Coast of NSW, enlisted veteran Mark Blyton as their 2022-23 season driver.

With Bohud Racing being a completely new team, Blyton, who had over 30 plus years of racing experience, was brought into the team as their driver in an effort to help guide the team through their infant stages of 410 Sprintcar racing, where they were going to be based at Sydney’s Eastern Creek Speedway.

Although the partnership between Bohud Racing and Blyton came to a premature end after four race meetings, which saw Blyton qualify into the feature race on two occasions, team owner Scott Jones was very thankful for Blyton’s input.

“The whole Bohud Racing team is very appreciative of Mark’s help during the early stages of our step into Sprintcar racing,” commented Jones.

“Although things didn’t work out the way everyone had planned, Mark is still regarded as a friend of our team, and he goes down in history as our team’s inaugural driver.”

Following Blyton vacating the driver’s seat of the NS # 14 ARRMA Australia / Illawarra Truck Repairs & Spares supported Triple X car, Michael Stewart was brought into the team to head up the Bohud Racing operation as its driver. An established Speedcar racer, who had a bit of previous Sprintcar experience, filled in for the team a month earlier at Eastern Creek Speedway following Blyton being unable to drive due to an injury he sustained in a Wingless Sprint crash. During this cameo appearance at Eastern Creek Speedway, the 27-year-old talent performed strongly and brought home a sixth-place finish in the feature race.

Joining the Bohud Racing team as their full-time driver in mid-December, Stewart showed plenty of promise during the Christmas-New Year period, which included the team’s first ever race victory a heat race along with a few heat race minor podium finishes and numerous encouraging feature race performances.

After a break from racing in the month of January, due to the wet weather and the major 410 Sprintcar interstate events, the Bohud Racing team and Stewart returned to action in the best possible way in early February at Eastern Creek Speedway. Stewart had a near perfect night by qualifying second in his time trial group, winning both of his heat races, finishing fourth in the Gold Shootout and then topping the night by taking out the feature race victory.

“If someone had said to me at the beginning of the season that we would have picked up a feature race win in our first season, I would’ve said they were crazy, but when Michael joined the team, I felt confident early on that we would be able to challenge for spots on the podium,” explained team owner Scott Jones.

“On the night we won the feature race, Michael was in great touch as a driver and the team had the car running really well, and to be able to pick up the victory was an amazing feeling for not only me but the entire team.”

Stewart and the team had another break from racing following their breakthrough win for the rest of February as Stewart concentrated on his Speedcar program with the Australian Championship being held at Eastern Creek Speedway.

The month of March saw Stewart and the team show plenty of speed, which included a pair of heat race wins, but they struggled for feature race results due to some teething issues with the car. In what was an encouraging performance, they were able to finish the month with a top-10 finish in the NSW Title at Eastern Creek Speedway.

Stewart and the team over the next two months didn’t have much luck with the wet weather and a few mechanical issues with the car during the April 15 race meeting. However, they certainly finished their first season on a high, when they ventured up to Queensland for the two-night farewell race meeting at Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway for what was the team’s first visit to a track outside of Eastern Creek Speedway. Stewart managed to bring home a third-place finish in the preliminary feature race and then on the second and final night, he was running strongly well inside the top 10, only to suffer a mechanical issue in the closing stages that denied him of a sixth-place finish. Stewart and the whole team were rapt with how they performed at Archerfield Speedway, and it was a pleasing way for them to finish off their maiden full season in 410 Sprintcars.

Bohud Racing team owner Scott Jones looks back on his first season in 410 Sprintcar with plenty to be happy about.

“I’m really pleased with how our season went and we were certainly able to exceed our own expectations, as Michael drove fantastic and showed everyone just what a talented driver he is,” commented a proud Jones.

“There were a few ups and downs during the season, which is what you have to expect in the Sprintcar racing game. I really enjoyed my first season as a team owner, although it’s a lot of hard work, the rewards when everything comes together certainly make it all worthwhile.

“Now with our first season out of the way, the whole team has plenty to build on for the future, and that’s very exciting for us heading into next season, as we are already busy getting our plans in place.”

The Bohud Racing team finished the season’s Sprintcar Association of NSW Club Championship in 15th place after missing a handful of rounds and they also picked up the Best Presented Team award at the end-of-season Sprintcar Association of NSW Presentation Night.
