Libby geared up for Archerfield farewell

AFTER 40 years of action, Brisbane’s Archerfield Speedway in Queensland is closing its gates forever with the two-night farewell race meeting on June 2 and 3, and one of the competitors that is going to be there is popular Sprintcar racer Libby Ellis.

One of the Archerfield Speedway track’s biggest supporters, which has seen her contest every Sprintcar race meeting at the venue over the past five seasons, Ellis carries mixed emotions into the event.

“I would be lying if I said I wasn’t a bit sad about contesting the two-night farewell race meeting, but at the same time, I’m excited about sending the track off in style,” she expressed.

“Like a lot of people, I have spent a lot of time going to Archerfield Speedway and when I started off in Sprintcars five years ago, it’s the track where I have done the majority of my racing.

“Archerfield Speedway is a very special place for not just for us competitors, but for the race fans, as there is just so much history over the past 40 years there, and it’s going to be very sad to see it go.”

Despite being sad about the impending closure of the Archerfield Speedway track, Ellis is hoping that this isn’t the end for speedway racing within the Brisbane area.

“It’s vital to have a speedway track located within the Brisbane area, and hopefully a new track can be built in the not too distant future,” enthused Ellis.

“There are so many competitors and race fans who live not too far from the Archerfield Speedway track, so with Archerfield Speedway closing, it leaves a massive hole within the entire Queensland speedway industry.”

Ellis, who drives the NQ # 73 J&J Sprintcar, is regarded as one of the most popular Sprintcar racers within her home state of Queensland.

“Since stepping into Sprintcars five years ago, I’ve built up a wonderful fan base, especially here in Brisbane, and it’s one of the best things about being involved in the sport as a competitor,” she said.

“My team and I have travelled around Australia to contest many of the major Sprintcar events over the past two seasons, but nothing beats racing in front of my home crowd and then being able to interact with them all at the end of the night’s racing.”

When it comes to her highlights competing around the Archerfield Speedway track, Ellis is quick to note, winning a feature race in the Development Series and also the night she picked up her first heat race victory.

“It’s a pretty cool achievement being a Sprintcar feature race winner there, but the night I won my first heat race, I remember jumping out of my car for my infield driver interview and saluting the crowd, which they all loved, as I was just so excited and couldn’t contain myself,” she recalled.

With a massive field of over 60 Sprintcars entered for the two-night Archerfield Speedway farewell race meeting, Ellis is too daunted about taking on some of the country’s best racers, which is going to include current Australian Champion Jock Goodyer from Tasmania and reigning Grand Annual Classic winner Brock Hallett from Victoria.

“My goal every night that I step into a Sprintcar is to go out there and do the very best I can, and have some fun in the process,” she proudly said.

“Sprintcar racing for me is a big passion that I get to share with my partner and fellow Sprintcar racer Anthony, so as long as we are enjoying ourselves together then we are winning.”
