Steven Zammit is the “Champion of Winton” after claiming three race victories from four Giti Tire Supertrucks championship races at Winton Motor Raceway last weekend.
In doing so, the SRZ Racing pilot extended his championship lead heading into the fourth and final Giti Tire Supertrucks round of the year at Wakefield Park Raceway in December.
The top three trucks were line astern on Saturday with championship contenders, Barry Butwell and Shannon Smith, rounding out the podium respectively in races one and two.
Craig Yardy was also impressive on the first day of racing with a pair of top-five finishes in the Kara Kar Trailers Isuzu FSR light truck.
On Sunday, Frank Amoroso briefly rained on the SRZ Racing parade in the penultimate race of the weekend with a superb defensive drive to hold out a charging Steven Zammit.
The latter would not be denied victory in the final race, however. Starting from the rear of the field and barely avoiding an opening lap spin for Craig Yardy, Steven Zammit picked through the field one truck at a time to reach the rear of Barry Butwell’s Mack Superliner.
Reminiscent of the previous Giti Tire Supertrucks race meeting at Winton in September, Barry Butwell held on for a number of laps before Steven Zammit claimed the runner-up position in a wild moment on the back straight. The SRZ Racing spearhead cleared Robert Fern’s race-leading Volvo to win the final championship heat of the weekend from the familiar duo of Barry Butwell and Shannon Smith respectively.
On top of four Giti Tire Supertrucks sessions on Sunday, trackside fans were also treated to a Show & Shine which featured a strong turnout of stunningly presented trucks, trailers and cars.
The Giti Tire Supertrucks trophy presentation was held at the centre of the Show & Shine concourse after the final race of the weekend in a setting that captured the recent resurgence of interest in competitive truck racing in Australia.
The final round of the 2017 Giti Tire Super Truck Nationals will be held at Wakefield Park Raceway on December 2nd – 3rd.
