On for Young and Old in Queensland Saloon Cars

On for Young and Old in Queensland Saloon CarsA mixture of old and new faces will take to the track at round one of the 2017 Queensland Saloon Car Series, as part of the 2 Days of Thunder meeting at Queensland Raceway.

The 12-car grid will see the debut of two former Queensland HQ Holden Series champions, in two-time winner Jamie Furness and 2015 champion Brock Mitchell.

With five years of experience in HQ Holdens, Mitchell is making the step up into Saloon Cars with the intention of progressing his racing career. He will be driving the reigning back-to-back championship winning Ford AU Falcon, previously driven by Coleby Cowham.

“I have wanted to move forward in my racing career to the next step-up in classes to something quicker and more like a real race car, and saloon cars looked the way to go from watching them race,” Mitchell said.

“My main goal for this weekend is to just go around and around to get some time in the driver’s seat and see the way that the saloon cars run a race meeting.

“In saying that, I would also like to see myself to have a top five finish for the weekend, that would be great as well.”

This event will also see the return of Martin Deckert and Gerard Miscamble to the Saloon Cars grid, following a five and six-year hiatus respectively.

Saloon Car regulars John McCleverty, Brad Carr, Paul Jarvis, Lindsay Kearns, John Carter Jamie Kielly, Shayne Hine and Tony Shanks make up the rest of the grid, with McCleverty, Carr, Jarvis and Kearns heading into the first round of the series after running at the Bathurst 6 Hour race over the Easter weekend.

Adding to a packed grid will be the growing Tradie Utes Series, with both classes sharing the track at what is one of the headline events on the Queensland club racing calendar.
