The big money sale of classic Holdens looks set to continue, with a rare Torana fetching a huge sale price over the weekend.
The 1977 Holden Torana A9X GMP&A sold for more than $800,000 at Saturday’s Lloyds Auctions, a new record for the Australian muscle car. The car in question was built by touring car squad, Ron Hodgson Motors, from one of only 33 race-specification chassis built by Holden and sold through General Motors Parts and Accessories; hence the ‘GMP&A’ name.
The last time a ‘GMP&A’ Torana was sold by Lloyds two years ago it fetched $500,000, while still an impressive number the massive jump in final dollars underlines the increased demand for locally-built classics since the demise of Holden as a brand.
“We are not surprised at this result because this is the holy grail of Holden motor collector cars in the country and since the closure of Holden, they have only become all the more popular,” said Lee Hames, Chief Operations Officer for Lloyds Auctions.
Lloyds, which is a Platinum Partner of Speedcafe, has several recent examples of big bucks being forked over for rare or special Holdens. The company secured a record price for an Australian-made car back in January when it oversaw the sale of a HSV Maloo GTSR W1 for $1.1m. Lloyds also sold the last Commodore to roll off the local production line for $750,000 earlier this year.
The $800k sale of this latest example is big money for a road-going Torana but it is slightly short of the record price for a racing version. That belongs to a 1977 Torana A9X raced by the Holden Dealer Team, by the late John Harvey, which Lloyds sold late in 2020 for $910,000.
