The FIA’s World Motor Sport Council has confirmed Formula One’s switch to 1.6 litre V6 engines for 2014.
The WMSC’s announcement follows an agreement between the Formula One team principals, via the Formula 1 Commission, on the format at last weekend’s European Grand Prix.

A brief statement from the WMSC read: “Following a fax vote by its members, the World Motor Sport Council has ratified the engine regulations recently drawn up in consultation with the main stakeholders in Formula One.
“The new power plant will be a V6 1.6 turbo unit with energy recovery systems. This new formula will come into effect as from the start of the 2014 FIA Formula One World Championship season.”
The rev limit for the new formula is still being debated, with teams understood to be pushing for a 15,000rpm limit, 3,000 greater than the figure initially proposed by the FIA.
