Experienced team engineer Bill Pappas has secured the role as IndyCar’s vice-president of competition and race engineering.
Pappas helped guide Juan Montoya to his maiden Indy 500 win for Chip Ganassi in 2000 and has also served with the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing and Dale Coyne Racing squads.
He had recently been with KV Racing Technology which are charged with the task this year of fielding the Pirtek Team Murray entry that will be driven by Matthew Brabham at the Indianapolis road course race and Indy 500 in May.
“Being able to join the IndyCar team is a great opportunity,” Pappas said.
“I hope my racing experience and perspective can be utilised to enhance an already great level of competition.”
The role will see Pappas responsible for all engineering and technical operations, including chassis and engine development, safety enhancements and aerodynamic initiatives.
He will manage relationships with chassis and engine suppliers.
“His deep engineering expertise and long history of accomplishments in IndyCar racing have earned him the respect of team owners and drivers alike,” IndyCar president of competition and operations, Jay Frye, said.
Pappas replaces Will Phillips who will leave the category next month.
The new Verizon IndyCar Series season starts with the Firestone Grand Prix at St Petersburg, Florida on March 13.
