Speedcar driver Robbie Gordon remains in intensive care after undergoing major surgery on back and neck injuries sustained in a violent crash at Premier Speedway.

Gordon was airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne on Friday night following a high speed accident at the Warrnambool track during the Speedcar ProSeries Grand Final.

After being admitted in a serious but stable condition, he underwent major surgery on Saturday night before being transferred to Melbourne’s Austin Hospital Spinal Unit, where he remains in intensive care.

There has been a slight improvement in Gordon’s condition since the operation.

The Victorian racer has been able to communicate with his family since the surgery.

Premier Speedway Management has released the following statement on behalf of Gordon’s family.

“The family, while overwhelmed at the amount of calls, text messages and well wishes they have received from throughout the Speedway Industry, would at this time again like to ask that they please be given the time and space that is required at such a difficult time,” the statement said.

“Robbie’s Father John, his Mum Geraldine and Brother Brad are at present 100 percent committed to Robbie’s well being and it is their request that they, along with their family, be left to handle the situation in their own way at present.
