Martin puts Honda on top in final TCR Australia practice

John Martin

Wall Racing’s John Martin clocked the fastest time of the day to top the final TCR Australia practice session at Queensland Raceway.

The winner of the last TCR Australia race at The Bend Motorsport Park lit up the timing screens with 10 minutes remaining in the #24 Honda Civic Type R.

Martin clocked a 1:13.92s which proved enough to finish the day fastest.

Practice 1 pace-setter Dylan O’Keeffe had briefly held top spot two minutes before Martin’s effort.

The Ash Seward Motorsport driver immediately responded to post a 1:14.0s but was unable to topple Martin with his Alfa Romeo only 0.09s shy.

Frenchman Jean-Karl Vernay continued to build his pace throughout the session as he continues to familiarise himself with Queensland Raceway.

The 2017 TCR International Series champion ended up third fastest in the #4 Melbourne Performance Centre Audi RS3 just 0.1s adrift.

Series leader Will Brown (HMO Customer Racing, Hyundai) was half a second off the pace in fourth ahead of Garry Rogers Motorsport’s new recruit Jordan Cox.

Russell Ingall had topped the times for a period just prior to the halfway point of the session before eventually dropping to sixth in the #100 Castrol-backed Audi.

Nathan Morcom was seventh in the sister HMO Customer Racing Hyundai, while Tony D’Alberto (Wall Racing, Honda), Aaron Cameron (Melbourne Performance Centre, Volkswagen) and Alex Rullo (Kelly Racing, Opel) rounded out the top 10.

After missing opening practice, Andre Heimgartner clocked his first laps in the Opel Astra to finish in 12th spot, while James Moffat could only manage 13th in the best of Garry Rogers Motorsport’s Renault Meganes.

Action will continue on Saturday with qualifying set for 1020 AEST ahead of Race 1 at 1415 AEST.
