Mexican driver Sergio Perez has admitted that he may look at switching to IndyCar if his F1 options dry up for 2014.
Flung from the McLaren team after just one season, Perez is still working on a deal to stay on the grand prix grid.
The 23-year-old was axed in favour of the Formula Renault 3.5 Series champion and second generation F1 driver Kevin Magnussen.
Perez has told Autosport magazine that he would have to look at IndyCar if all avenues to remain in F1 are closed.
The prime available drive in IndyCar remains the seat in the #10 Chip Ganassi machine after Dario Franchitti's recent decision to adhere to medical advice and retire from racing.
There has been much activity behind the scenes in finding a replacement for Franchitti with Ganassi recently suggesting the squad has to decide whether it will go for experience or an up and coming youngster.
However it is known that the Ganassi squad had approached associates of Sam Hornish jr in an effort to lure him back into IndyCar.
Hornish jr has since forged a career in NASCAR after netting three IndyCar Championships and an Indy 500 win and is adamant about not returning to open-wheel.
It has been six years since Hornish jr last raced in IndyCar where he is the winner of 19 races.
Franchitti's cousin, Paul di Resta has also hinted that IndyCar may be his future after spending three difficult seasons in F1 at Force India.
