McLaughlin fastest ahead of Top 10 Shootout

Scott McLaughlin put Volvo on top in Saturday qualifying at Surfers Paradise after a session that saw all five marques qualify for the Top 10 Shootout.

McLaughlin set the early pace with a 1:11.27s on his first run before sitting in the pits for a lengthy spell.

He was demoted to third before returning to the circuit and improving to a 1:10.87s, which proved unbeatable over the final minute.

Red Bull duo Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup secured second and third, while Shane van Gisbergen, Tim Slade and Garth Tander made it five Holdens in the top six.

Lee Holdsworth, David Reynolds, Michael Caruso and Nick Percat complete the Shootout field.

It was a double disaster for Ford Performance Racing as Mark Winterbottom and Chaz Mostert ended up 11th and 19th respectively.

Winterbottom ran down the Turn 11 escape road on his final lap while an early misjudgement from Mostert at Turn 9 saw FPR forced into a mid-session front spoiler change.

Mostert ended up one position behind Greg Ritter, who was selected for qualifying duties over primary driver Robert Dahlgren.

Eighteenth marks the #34 Volvo’s equal third best starting spot of the year; 2.6 places up on Dahlgren’s average.

James Courtney was meanwhile just 14th after an early brush with the concrete hampered his progress.

Scott Pye likewise managed just 22nd after suffering power steering problems with his Dick Johnson Racing Ford.

After much discussion post-practice, the tyre bundle and electronic sensor systems to monitor kerb hopping remained unchanged for qualifying.

Drivers continued to have lap times deleted for triggering the sensors, although the 60 second stop-go penalties for recording four breaches was relaxed.

The Shootout is scheduled to get underway at 1240 local time.
