Scott McLaughlin says he doesn’t feel unbeatable amid a period of dominance that has seen the reigning Supercars champion win an impressive 12 of the 16 races to date.
McLaughlin was rarely threatened at Hidden Valley as he clean swept the weekend, scoring two commanding victories from pole position.
The Kiwi has now chalked up 11 Armor All Pole Positions alongside his 12 victories to further outline his stranglehold on the series this season.
After admitting to being ‘in the zone’ and driving the best of his career to date, McLaughlin says he is making the most of the opportunity he has this year.
“I don’t feel unbeatable. I feel in the zone,” said McLaughlin.

“I feel I’ve got to make the most of the opportunity I got.
“The car is sensational, and when you have clear air in this series, especially at a hot track like this (in Darwin), you’ve got to make the most of it.
“It’s better for getting that start and being able to take off with it, and really then you can control the strategy from there.
“We were able to stay out longer than others, and we came out with the faster strategy in the end because we had that gap.
“So, I put it down to a lot of the clear air, and the fast car and being able to use it.”
McLaughlin’s domination of the championship has seen the Ford driver race into a 319-point lead over nearest rival and team-mate Fabian Coulthard.
The margin is more than a round’s worth of points, such is the 26-year-old’s advantage over the field.
Despite the huge points gap, McLaughlin has no intention to cruise, especially with the yet to be claimed Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 on the horizon in October.
“We build a gap for the worst circumstance,” he added.
“We absolutely know that if we finish every race in a good spot, we could cruise, but we don’t want to do that.
“We want to attack and build a gap and be able to attack in the enduros and not worry about the championship. That’s what we’re trying to build to.
“I want to have a gap that I can attack in the enduros and not worry about; Bathurst is the next thing on my list, so I don’t to be worried about the points gap.”
McLaughlin’s pursuit of a second Supercars title will continue at next month’s Watpac Townsville 400.
