The chances of Mercedes Benz entering the V8 Supercars Championship Series is gaining momentum, with further reports that the German manufacturer is set to enter the sport in the very near future.

With the Mark Skaife-driven ‘Car of the Future’ concept set to be unveiled next month, there is growing speculation that Mercedes will join the V8 Supercars fray.

Fox Sports reports today that Mercedes AMG brand, or a private entry, is set to enter the V8 field with a Triple Eight Race Engineering-built car – and Skaife has been mentioned as its driver!

Mercedes spokesman David McCarthy would not deny the chance of the company moving into V8 Supercars.

“Mercedes-Benz Australia Pacific is not allowed to go motor racing and it is not something we are looking to do,” McCarthy told Fox Sports.

“However, some of our AMG customers and dealers are looking at it very closely and I’m not sure how that is going to develop.”

While Mercedes is now heavily in the V8 frame, there are other manufacturers linked to the class, including Korean-based companies Kia and Hyundai. With the championship set to head into Singapore next year and Korea within the next three years, local manufacturer representation in those markets is desirable.

And adding to the intrigue behind the Mercedes-to-V8s story, the V8 Supercars Australia Twitter service today posted a cryptic message that said “Can’t give too much away, but there could be some major announcements about the Car of the Future at Clipsal/Melbourne GP.”
