Moffat leads Nissan one-two at Winton

Moffat and Caruso embrace post-race

James Moffat survived a late-race scare to take maiden wins for himself and Nissan Motorsport in the V8 Supercars Championship at Winton.

The son of four-time Australian Touring Car Champion Allan Moffat took the lead from team-mate Michael Caruso at the double-file rolling restart, where the outside lane proved the place to be.

Moffat then controlled the race until the gap over Caruso closed from 0.8s to just 0.3s with six laps to go after he ran wide at Turn 10.

Moffat was able to steady the ship, however, eventually taking the flag 0.8s ahead to become the 11th different race winner of the season.

Pole-sitter Jamie Whincup had led the first leg of the race until a driveline failure forced him to pull off the circuit on Lap 10.

Jason Bright took third having moved his way through from seventh on the grid to fourth by the completion of the opening leg,

Rounding up Mark Winterbottom on the restart, the Team BOC Holden looked a threat to the Nissans early in the second set of 20 laps before eventually falling more than five seconds adrift of Moffat.

Winterbottom, James Courtney, Will Davison, Fabian Coulthard, Garth Tander, Russell Ingall and David Reynolds completed the top 10.

Much of the race’s action occurred around sixth-placed qualifier Shane van Gisbergen, who struggled for pace in both heats. The Kiwi eventually finished 13th.

Awkwardly for Nissan and V8 Supercars, today’s landmark result has come on a weekend where the two Norton cars, and the Erebus Mercedes of Maro Engel, are trialling a revised blend fuel in the lead-up to the endurance races.
