NASCAR team co-owner Gene Haas has revealed plans to create a new American-based team to join Formula 1 as early as 2015.
The co-owner of the Stewart-Haas NASCAR outfit has responded to a call by the FIA call for new entrants to join the championship.
Haas has revealed he is keen to expand his motor racing portfolio by joining F1 and has submitted a formal response to the governing body.
Full applications are required to be sent to the FIA before February 10 with a formal decision slated for the end of the month.
It is reported the team would be called Haas Racing Developments.
“We have responded to the FIA's ‘call for expression of interest' regarding a Formula 1 entry on behalf of Haas Racing Development,” the Haas said in a statement on Thursday.
“We respect the FIA's evaluation process and will share more details in the coming weeks.”
Haas is not the first American keen to create a US based team to join the series following the unsuccessful plans of the USF1 team led by Ken Anderson back in 2010.
The USF1 squad were initially accepted to compete in the category but they were removed from the entry lost as they were not in a position to race.
Formula 1 media reports indicate that Haas, who owns a full-scale wind tunnel in North Carolina, is working with former Red Bull and Jaguar technical director Guenther Steiner on the latest project.
Caterham, Marussia and HRT were the last teams to join F1 when the category opened its doors to new applicants in 2010.
HRT bowed out of the category at the end of last season, while Caterham and Marussia continue to their pursuits for a maiden world championship point.
