NATIONALS: Ojeda backs up in F4 at the Island

Jayden Ojeda

CAMS Payce Australian Formula 4 Championship

Jayden Ojeda backed up his maiden CAMS Payce Australian Formula 4 race win with two more on the final day of Shannons Nationals at Phillip Island.

Ojeda started Race 2 from fifth by virtue of his first up win and was second by the end of Lap 1.

The AGI Sport driver slipstreamed past Cameron Shields into Doohan Corner on Lap 3 and went on to win by nearly three seconds, from Shields and Aaron Love.

He started from the top spot again for Race 3, was passed by Ryan Suhle at Siberia on Lap 1, but regained the lead on Lap 4 and took the chequered flag with a margin over four seconds.

Suhle ran second until the end and Love re-passed Jackson Walls mid-race to finish third again.

Shields was officially a DNF and virtually a DNS when his car suffered a driveline failure.

He remains championship leader by a single point over Suhle, while Ojeda is just one point further back again.

Round 3 will be held at the Coates Hire Ipswich SuperSprint on July 20-22.

Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge

Cooper Murray extended his Porsche Michelin GT3 Cup Challenge series lead with a sweep of Round 3.

Murray led Race 2 for all but the chute between Stoner Corner and the Turn 4 Hairpin on Lap 1, when he was challenged by Simon Fallon.

Fallon eventually finished 2.57s behind in second position and Jimmy Vernon third, after Max Vidau ran off at Southern Loop for the second race in a row while running third.

Vidau went on to finish ninth, where he therefore started Race 3.

Murray made a strong start to that encounter but was passed by Fallon through Southern Loop on Lap 1.

It took five laps of intense pressure for the Ashley Seward Motorsport driver to reclaim the spot, and a charging Vidau relegated Fallon to third at MG later that lap.

The Sonic Motor Racing driver also looked to be a threat to Murray before breaking into a big slide entering Gardner Straight with two laps to go.

Vidau caught the moment and while it put paid to his chances of victory, he finished well clear of third-placed Fallon in the end.

Round 4 supports Shannons Nationals at Queensland Raceway on July 27-29.

Radical Australia Cup

Yasser Shahin and James Winslow made it two from two with another sizeable win in Radical Australia Cup.

Winslow carved his way from fourth on the grid to lead out of the first corner and gapped the field before hander over to Shahin under Safety Car.

They effectively led by nearly a lap when the race resumed and were officially first position once Jon Collins peeled off for his compulsory pit stop at the end of Lap 19.

Nathan Kumar finished 22.96s behind in second after 23 laps, with Chris Perini third.

Round 5 takes place on the Shannons Nationals card at Sydney Motorsport Park on September 21-23.
