Newgarden given Pocono pole as qualifying abandoned

Josef Newgarden

IndyCar Series leader Josef Newgarden will start from pole position at Pocono after qualifying was abandoned due to rain.

The starting grid for the 500-mile race was therefore set by entrant points, meaning Newgarden (#2 Team Penske Chevrolet) will start alongside his nearest rival for the title, Alexander Rossi (#27 Andretti Autosport Honda).

Simon Pagenaud (#22 Team Penske Chevrolet) starts third, from Scott Dixon (#9 Chip Ganassi Racing Honda), Will Power (#12 Team Penske Chevrolet), and Ryan Hunter-Reay (#28 Andretti Autosport Honda).

Practice 1 had already been delayed as thick clouds prevented the medical helicopter from reaching the circuit, before rain stopped both that session and qualifying from being held.

As such, Newgarden does not receive the bonus point for pole position.

Tony Kanaan (#14 AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet) was fastest in what was subsequently the only practice session of the day, when race runs were in order, but will line up in 19th position for the 200-lap race.

Tickets for the 2026 betr Darwin Triple Crown are on sale now. Secure your spot today.
