Daniel Ricciardo will contest this weekend’s Chinese Grand Prix with a one-off helmet design, donning a Sir Jack Brabham inspired paint scheme.
The crash helmet features precise details including stone chips and decals stuck on with duct tape, replicating the colours three-time world champion Brabham once drove with.
The design makes a special appearance to mark the 1000th Formula 1 championship round at the Shanghai International Circuit.
Ricciardo’s teammate Nico Hulkenberg and Williams’ George Russell have also elected to run with one-off helmet designs this weekend.
Hulkenberg revealed a retro-themed design of his current helmet while reigning Formula 2 champion Russell has gone for a split design with one side his current livery and the other the helmet colours of former Williams ace Juan Pablo Montoya.
Russell said that Montoya was one of his idols while growing up.
“As Montoya’s a bit of a Williams legend, he’s one of my favourite F1 drivers of all time – just his sort of character, the way he approached the racing, everything, he was a driver who you would enjoy watching,” said the Brit.
“So I thought it would be something nice to go half-half this weekend.”
Implemented for the 2015 championship, Formula 1 drivers have only been permitted to change their helmet design once per season so that fans can more easily recognise drivers.
The Chinese Grand Prix commences today with Practice 1 from 1200 AEST.
