Smith ready to graduate to Supercars Championship

Jack Smith

Jack Smith believes he is ready to make the step up to the Supercars Championship with the young gun strongly tipped to do so with Brad Jones Racing next year.

Smith has already experienced Supercars’ main game this year having made four wildcard appearances with BJR, at Symmons Plains, Winton, Darwin and The Bend Motorsport Park.

In addition to those outings, the 20-year-old has teamed up with Todd Hazelwood at Matt Stone Racing to contest the Pirtek Enduro Cup.

These extra events have also come on top of a Super2 campaign with BJR and a title winning campaign in New Zealand’s BNT V8s.

Smith has already indicated his desire to graduate to the Supercars Championship on a full-time basis with his dream expected to come true next year.

Speedcafe.com understands the Smith family has purchased the Racing Entitlements Contract currently used by MSR and previously owned by Jason Bright to underpin an entry for next season out of an expanded four-car BJR stable.

While there is widespread talk the move will happen, Smith remained tight lipped when Speedcafe.com broached the subject with him.

“I can’t really say anything,” Smith told Speedcafe.com

“You can make as many assumptions as you like,” when asked if it was fair assumption he would be on the grid next year.

However, Smith did admit that he feels ready to make the leap to Supercars Championship in 2020.

“The wildcards were ok, we got out of them what wanted,” he added.

“I do think I’m ready to step up. Of course I have got a lot of learning and a lot of stuff to achieve. It would be good to be able to do that at the top.

“Right now finishing off the year with the enduros, and Super2 at Sandown and Newcastle, they are my main focus right now and it would be great to end the year on a high.”

Smith is likely to be just one of several drivers movements as the silly season continues to ramp up.

Chaz Mostert is set to be the biggest with the Tickford Racing driver expected to join Walkinshaw Andretti United with Jack Le Brocq set to fill the vacant seat at the Ford squad.

The second seat at WAU is yet to be filled with Scott Pye believed to be in the frame to join Team 18 in its new second entry.

MSR is yet to reveal the line up for its expanded, two car effort although Tim Slade and Garry Jacobson have been linked to the team.

Meanwhile, it is unclear who will fill the second seat alongside James Courtney at the new Sydney based team.
