The Kerrick Sports Sedan series will remember its late former champion Des Wall with a perpetual trophy named in his honour.
The Des Wall Trophy will be awarded to the winner of the third race at the opening round of each season, beginning with today’s 2013 kick-off at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Wall won the 2009 Sports Sedan title in a Chevrolet Corvette, and continued to compete in the class until he was diagnosed with brain cancer in mid-2012.
Wall, who had earlier campaigned a Toyota Supra Sports Sedan in the 1990s, was 61 when he passed away last November.
“We have been working with competitors and the management of the Kerrick Sports Sedan series to find the most appropriate way to remember Des and his fantastic and passionate involvement in Sports Sedan racing,” explained Shannons Nationals series Director Rob Curkpatrick.
“Everyone loved Des and his involvement in the sport and this will be one of the big races of the year that everyone will try especially hard to win.”
Series stalwart Jeff Barnes is running Wall’s former number, #38, on his Pontiac Trans-Am this weekend as a further tribute.
Wall’s son David currently competes in the V8 Supercars Championship in Brad Jones Racing’s Wilson Security Holden.
Alfa GTV driver Tony Ricciardello will start this morning’s opening race of the weekend from pole position after narrowly defeating rival Darren Hossack (Audi A4) in qualifying.
