Tony Stewart faces a lengthy period of recovery after undergoing a second surgery on his badly broken right leg.
Only three days after his Sprintcar crash at Oskaloosa in Iowa, the three-times NASCAR Sprint Cup champion had a metal rod placed to stabilise his fractured tibia following the initial surgery to stabilise his injuries.
There is no official timeframe on when Stewart is likely to return to Sprint Cup racing in the #14 Chevrolet he co-owns with Gene Haas.
As previously reported, Max Papis will replace Stewart in the #14 at this weekend's Cheez-It 335 at Watkins Glen.
Stewart is currently 11th in the points standings and could still gain a wildcard entry into the Chase based on his single win so far this season.
