The Walkinshaw TWG Racing driver was part of a multi-car battle scrapping over sixth place during the 68-lapper at Reid Park.
Wood traded places with Triple Eight’s Will Brown on Lap 39 when the Ford Mustang driver lunged the Toyota Supra at Turn 11.
They continued their battle on Lap 40, which brought Grove Racing’s Kai Allen and the other Triple Eight Ford Mustang of Broc Feeney into the picture.
It ended with Wood diagonalling the apex at Turn 11 to try to shut down an attack from Allen.
Allen skated his car into the braking zone and made contact with Wood’s right front corner, bending the steering.
Wood was forced to stop with damage and eventually returned to the pits for repairs.

“We need to put something in,” Wood said over the radio to his Walkinshaw TWG Racing team.
“These guys are taking the piss, man.”
Speaking post-race, Wood offered a wry smile before delivering his tongue-in-cheek assessment of the race.
“It was super clean racing and it was awesome,” said Wood.
“Had a good race. Unfortunate what happened at the end and we’ll come back tomorrow.”
What a crazy two laps between Will Brown, Ryan Wood, Kai Allen and Chaz Mostert!!!

Supercars pit lane reporter Riana Crehan said she sensed “a lot of sarcasm” in Wood’s response, who delved deeper into the fracas.
“Nah, I think it was all right. It’s racing, at the end of the day,” Wood explained.
“Yeah, I just sort of know what the standard is at the moment and I’ll try do the same tomorrow and force people to either crash or get out of the way.
“It is what it is.”
Wood pointed the finger at Brown for an incident that was unsighted on the broadcast at Turn 1 as well as the clash with Allen at Turn 11.
“It was just frustrating because I felt like we had a decent car to be in the fight,” said Wood.
“There were just a few moves that obviously really upset me, but at the same time, it’s part of going racing.
“Looking back on it now, Kai was in there and I forced him pretty hard to the inside, but I felt like he was probably a little bit out of control as well at the same time. It is what it is.
“Me and Browny went at it and as always. Browny pushes it to the nth degree and I felt like the only one that I was probably angry about was at the exit of Turn 1 when you get driven to the wall and either you have a choice to commit or crash with him or back out.
“It just feels like everything is pushing the envelope because it is so competitive at the moment. Just sorry to my guys, because we need the points. Today was a bit gut-wrenching.
“Sorry if I was angry on the tele, to my mum and dad. Hopefully we come back [strong] tomorrow because we made a really good step today.
“I’ll go watch some PBR (Pro Bull Riding) and chill out a bit and probably take a couple of chill pills before tomorrow.”
Wood came into the second race of the Townsville 500 on 1015 points and eighth in the drivers’ championship
He was 78 points in arrears of Will Brown but now sits 142 points behind seventh-placed Brown.
The gap back to teammate Chaz Mostert has also narrowed from 89 points to 31 points.
The Townsville 500 continues on Sunday with qualifying at 11:25am AEST, which will be followed by the Top 10 Shootout. Race 3 is set for 3:05pm AEST.
