Garth Tander has upgraded his chances in this year’s V8 Supercars Championship Series from ‘none’ to ‘potentially.’
After winning both legs of the Clipsal 500, the Toll Holden Racing Team driver has given himself a faint chance in the title chase, thanks to his twin Adelaide victories.
But even if the 2007 V8 champ doesn’t win the V8 series this year, he is the only man who could win the inaugural V8 Grand Slam. All he needs to do is cross the line first in the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, and score the most points at the Gold Coast Supercarnivale and Sydney Telstra 500 … (no easy task!)
After a horror start to the season in the Middle East, for the time being, Tander is just taking it race-by-race.
“You can’t change the past, all you can do is influence the future,” Tander said, who sits 11th in the championship.
“Certainly, we didn’t feel we were done justly in the Midde East with the penalty, but we can’t change it now and certainly couldn’t change it at the time.
“All we can do is look forward, and all I’ve been saying is that we need to win as many races as we can, and if we can do that, we can potentially get back into it.
“We still need to have a few results like we did this weekend to fight back. It was important for us to have the results we did this weekend.
“We’ll go to Hamilton and try to do what we have done this weekend. The only way to get back into the championship is to win races and that’s our goal in the short term. We don’t expect to be back in the hunt until the endurance races.”
