Tickford Racing will pay tribute to touring car legend Allan Moffat with a special Sandown 500 retro livery for the #55 Ford Mustang piloted by Chaz Mostert and James Moffat.
The Ford squad has recreated the iconic Trans-Am Coca Cola Mustang that four-time Australian Touring Car champion Allan Moffat debuted at Sandown 50 years ago.
Moffat originally brought one of seven M-Code 302 Boss Mustangs produced by Ford’s racing division Kar Kraft to Australia after persuading the powers that be to let him race one in the Australian Touring Car Championship.
Driven by the touring car superstar, the Trans-Am Boss 302 Mustang or, as it became colloquially known, the Coca-Cola Mustang claimed an impressive 101 victories from 151 races.
Fittingly, the livery will be raced by Moffat’s son James, who will partner Mostert in at the squad’s spare chassis after the latter wrote off the #55 Supercheap Auto Mustang in a qualifying crash at the Vodafone Gold Coast 600.
“I guess it’s a happy coincidence that we get to race the No. 55 Mustang in the 55th year of Mustang,” said Mostert.
“So to celebrate retro round with a nod to one of the most iconic Mustangs in history is pretty cool.
“There’s so many tie-ins with this thing, obviously Allan is one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport, and I get to race with James which has been a lot of fun, and the Trans-Am is best known for winning at Sandown, so I’m pumped to bring it all together at the Sandown 500.”
For James Moffat, racing the new look Mustang will prove to be a special moment.
“The nod to dad is pretty cool,” said Moffat.
“Obviously I picked up the sport in part thanks to him and have heard the stories of the Trans-Am, so to adopt its livery for our Supercheap Auto Mustang is pretty sweet.
“Hopefully it brings us some good fortune and we can take it to the top step of the podium.”
The Penrite Oil Sandown 500 will take place from November 8-10.
