Sam Mayer and Jake Garcia earned pole positions Friday at EchoPark Speedway, putting both drivers at the front of Saturday’s NASCAR doubleheader.
Mayer claimed the top starting spot for the Bennett Transportation and Logistics 250 in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, posting a lap of 174.318 mph in the No. 41 Haas Factory Team Chevrolet.
Mayer paced both rounds of qualifying to secure his first career speedway pole.
Carson Kvapil qualified second at 173.875 mph in the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet.
Taylor Gray will start third after a lap of 173.766 mph, followed by Sheldon Creed at 173.760 mph.
Mayer is seeking a rebound after being involved in crashes at EchoPark last season and in last week’s series opener.
“It’s my first speedway pole, so that feels really good,” Mayer said. “It’s very rewarding. Everyone at Haas Factory Team did a great job. The pushes are a lot different with this Chevy nose. It’s something I had to relearn last week at Daytona and it’s going to be even bigger here.”
Defending race winner Austin Hill, who also won last week’s season opener, did not advance to the final round of qualifying and will start 20th.
“We just missed it,” Hill said. “That’s right in the hornets’ nest where a lot of bad things can go wrong. As long as we can get through the first handful of laps, I think we can make our way up through there.”
Earlier Friday, Garcia won the pole for the Fr8 Racing 208 in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series.
The Monroe, Georgia, native turned a lap of 172.980 mph in the No. 98 ThorSport Racing Ford F-150 for his fourth career series pole in his 77th start.
Garcia is coming off a 32nd-place finish in last week’s season opener after his truck sustained damage in a crash.
“It’s huge to start up front here in Atlanta,” Garcia said. “If you can control a lane, you put yourself in a good position to get stage points. It’s really special to start on the pole here. It’s a home track for me.”
Ben Rhodes qualified second at 172.726 mph in the No. 99 Ford.
Defending race winner Kyle Busch will start third at 172.662 mph in his first Truck Series start of the season.
Ruggiero did not record a lap in the final round and will start 10th.
The Truck Series race is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday on FS1 . The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race will follow at 5 p.m. on The CW. There is a threat of inclimen weather.
