The howling scream of a V10-powered Formula 1 car will be heard on the streets of the South Australian capital in 2024 when a 2000 Benetton B200 fires up at Adelaide Motorsport Festival on March 16-17.
The V10 era of Formula 1 is fondly remembered, particularly for the noise produced by the cars.
In the 2000 F1 season, the Benetton B200 was raced by Giancarlo Fisichella and Alexander Wurz, both in their third seasons with the team. It featured a new engine, the Playlife FB02 manufactured by Supertec, which was tailor made for the B200.
The car had podium results with Fisichella at the wheel. He finished third in Brazil before promoted to second, went through a patch of major point finishes before podiums at Monaco and Canada. From there it was a dry spell with DNFs at four of the next five outings.
Benetton finished fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, tied with British American Racing on 20 points, but placed in the standings ahead due to Fisichella’s three podium finishes.
The model heading to Adelaide was raced by Fisichella on his way to sixth in the championship and was also a spare car for both Fisichella and Wurz. The B200 is now powered by a Judd V10 engine which produces 750 hp (560 kW).
The Benetton B200 joins the Mazda 767B, Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 and Yamaha YZR 500 on the 2024 festival program.
Besides cars from Formula 1, there will be V8 Supercars, Group C and A Touring Cars, Sportscars, IndyCars and much more that will feature over the course of the festival. More news on categories, star cars and drivers, plus on and off-track activations will be announced in the near future.
