V8 Supercars has appointed a new head of Public Relations and Communications, signalling the first shake-up at the top of the department in more than a decade.
Nick Johnston has been hired for the role which he is expected to fully takeover in time for the Wilson Security Sandown 500 in September.
Johnston replaces Cole Hitchcock, who had served in the position for more than 11 years and will gradually hand over to his successor over the next two events at Queensland Raceway and Sydney Motorsport Park.
Previously a general manager of Corporate Affairs and Communications for the Greater Western Sydney Giants, Johnston had also served as Public Affairs manager at the AFL.
Johnston has an extensive media background including 20 years of experience in senior roles at Fairfax Media, the ABC and Nine Network.
“Nick played a key role in establishing the GWS Giants and building its brand in Australia’s most competitive sporting market,” V8 Supercars Chief Executive James Warburton said.
“He brings a wealth of experience to the role as we continue to build the profile of V8 Supercars as one of Australia’s leading sports.”
“Cole will work with Nick on a handover in the coming weeks as we build into an exciting period of the year in the lead-up to the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 in October.”
Hitchcock sent a note to his colleagues and media contacts earlier this week, outlining the development.
“It was the right time for me and the business,” he wrote.
“I am around this weekend (Queensland Raceway) and until SMSP with a possible cameo at Bathurst to finish off.”
