David Wall claimed pole position for the opening Porsche Payce Carrera Cup Australia race of the weekend at Surfers Paradise.
A string of quick laps late in the session solidified Wall’s position at the top of the timesheets ahead of Jordan Love and Cooper Murray, who had a moment with the wall at the opening chicane.
Wall’s final time, a 1:11.9712s, was an improvement of almost half a second at the start of a string of laps in the closing moments of the session.
His time pipped that of Love, who had held top spot with a 1:12.6617s, looked to threaten Wall with his final lap.
Though improving in the middle split and setting a personal best in the last, a sluggish opening to the lap plus Wall’s own improvements saw the Sonic Motorsport driver’s charge fall short at 1:12.1815s.
Dale Wood slotted into fourth, a spot he held for much of the session, then came Nick McBride and Thomas Maxwell.
A spin in the first half of the session made for a nervous moment for Cameron Hill as he found himself broadside to the direction of travel at the exit of the beachside chicane.
He was however able to gather the car without further incident before returning to the pits and ultimately banking the seventh quickest time.
The opening Porsche Carrera Cup Australia race of the weekend, a 28 lap affair around the Surfers Paradise circuit, gets underway at 1325 AEST on Saturday.
