Webber wins Peter Brock medal at CAMS Awards

Mark Webber

Former World Endurance champion and Formula 1 star Mark Webber was among those honoured at the annual national CAMS Awards Gala dinner held at Crown Casino in Melbourne.

The nine-time grand prix winner was awarded the coveted Peter Brock medal in recognition for his motor racing career at the very pinnacle in F1 and sports car racing.

Webber announced his retirement from competitive motorsport last season having enjoyed a 12-year spell in F1 driving for Minardi, Jaguar, Williams and Red Bull and after three seasons in the World Endurance Championship.

The 40-year-old, who was made an Officer of the Order of Australia on January 26, won the WEC for Porsche in 2015.

Unable to attend the awards, Webber recorded a special video message which was aired at the ceremony.

Engineering pioneer Bill Buckle OAM, creator of the Buckle Sports Coupe and the Goggomobil cars, claimed the Phil Irving Award for his service to the industry over a 60-year period.

Newly crowned German Formula 4 champion Joey Mawson was named as the CAMS Young Driver of the Year for a second consecutive year.

The 20-year-old from Sydney managed to see off a sustained challenge from Mick Schumacher, son of seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher, to win the ADAC German F4 title.

Australia’s Dr Brent May was named by the FIA as the Best Doctor of the Season.

May has occupied the role of chief medical officer at high profile meetings including the Australian F1 Grand Prix, the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix and World Superbike events at Phillip Island.

Garrett ‘Garry’ Coleman, OAM, accepted a Presidential Citation for being a National Coordinator and Senior Chaplain at motorsport events.

Dr Michael Henderson received the Award of Merit while Robert Thiry was awarded the 2015 Australian Official of the Year.

Motorsport media identities were also honoured, with photographer Glenis Lindley and commentator Neil Crompton receiving Media Service Awards.

Rebecca Thompson took out the Photograph of the Year, with John Morris claiming Photographer of the Year honours and News Limited’s Paul Gover awarded Journalist of the Year.

Two-time Bathurst 1000 winner John Bowe was among four recipients of Life Memberships along with Colin Trinder, Alan Vaughan and Denise Strawbridge for their contributions to Australian motorsport.

The night also saw national series and class champions formally presented with their respective championship and series trophies across all motorsport disciplines, including off road, circuit, rally and karting.
