Jamie Whincup and Scott McLaughlin will share the front-row for both of Saturday afternoon’s V8 Supercars races at Sydney Motorsport Park.
Whincup surpassed Peter Brock’s all-time record with a 58th career pole in the 10 minute session that set the grid for Race 26.
Second to Whincup in that session, McLaughlin went one better in the second hit-out, edging the Red Bull driver to the Armor All Pole Award.
The results set-up a strong day for Whincup’s championship campaign as closest rivals Mark Winterbottom and Craig Lowndes both struggled.
Winterbottom will start 17th in both races on what is proving a difficult weekend for Ford Performance Racing.
Lowndes managed sixth for Race 26 but will start Race 27 down in 21st.
The three-time champion sat second when he ran wide at Turn 2 on his final set of tyres, quickly dropping down the order as he sat in pitlane for the final minutes.
The leading Nissans showed strong form in both sessions, with highs of third for Rick Kelly ahead of Race 26 and fifth for Michael Caruso in the second session.
Kelly had briefly held the top spot in the dying stages of the opening hit-out before being displaced by the dominant duo.
Shane van Gisbergen was also a consistent performer, managing sixth and fourth.
Lee Holdsworth ensured that Erebus was represented in the top 10 in both sessions with a seventh and an eighth.
The top Ford on both occasions was David Reynolds, down in 13th and ninth.
The first of the afternoon’s 100km races will get underway at 1425 local time.
While both qualifying sessions were held in dry conditions, further showers are expected during the afternoon.
