Penrite Racing will run rising stars Jordan Boys and Broc Feeney in its Holden Commodores during the Additional Driver practice session at the Truck Assist Winton SuperSprint.
The 30 minute outing at Winton is expected to see the majority of the grid field co-drivers to aid preparations for the upcoming Pirtek Enduro Cup and help set-up the cars given there is only one primary drivers session before Armor All Qualifying on Saturday.
However, Erebus Motorsport has elected to hand the cars over to Super2 driver Boys and 16-year-old Super3 rookie Feeney instead of its co-drivers Luke Youlden and Will Brown.
Boys will drive David Reynolds’ #9 ZB Commodore while Feeney will take over Anton De Pasquale’s #99 entry.
“We already have 100 percent faith that both co-drivers are ready to start the enduros tomorrow, and there are plenty more opportunities for laps other than a 30-minute session at a track they know back to front,” said team boss Barry Ryan.
“Our practice plan doesn’t change this weekend and it’s always good to have someone new driving the car to give feedback and opinion.”
Saturday will prove to be a milestone moment in the fledgling career of teenager Feeney.
The Gold Coast driver is in his second year of car racing career having raced in the Toyota 86 Racing Series in 2018, and is currently an apprentice at Paul Morris’ Norwell Motorplex.
Feeney logged laps in an Erebus ZB Commodore at Winton during the last week’s test in preparation for the session.
“I had a great day working with the team and to get a few laps in the car was great,” Feeney said.
“It’s an unbelievable opportunity; at 16 I never could’ve dreamed of driving a main game Supercar and I am so excited to learn from this experience and carry all that I learn into my racing in the future.
“My main goal is to learn as much as I can and develop my skills in and out of the car; and to get a deeper understanding of how the team works.”
This season the 21-year-old has been driving for Erebus Motorsport Academy squad Image Racing.
“Working with the team so far has been great, we are learning heaps and I think the familiar environment will make the session much easier for me and I’ll be able to really focus on doing a good job with the laps I get,” said Boys.
“I’ve been working hard to learn the technique to drive an Erebus car fast, and this is a great opportunity to accelerate that process.”
It has also been confirmed that Super2 driver Joel Heinrich will drive the Matt Stone Racing ZB Commodore entry while Dean Canto will pilot Macauley Jones’ Team Cooldrive Holden in the session.
The Additional Driver Practice is scheduled for Saturday at 0920 AEST.
