Calan Williams has confirmed that he will compete in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2020 with Jenzer Motorsport.

The 19-year-old West Aussie took part in a post-season test at Valencia having competed in the Euroformula Open series for the past two seasons.

Driving for Fortec Motorsport, his best result in 2019 was a fourth place finish at the Red Bull Ring in Austria.

His move into the FIA F3 Championship will see Williams join a series which Alex Peroni and New Zealanders Marcus Armstrong and Liam Lawson competed in this year, and hosts its rounds alongside Formula 1.

“I am incredibly excited about the year ahead, and to be able to race during F1 events in front of F1 teams is a huge opportunity,” said Williams.

“Driving the car in Valencia was an amazing experience.

“It is a real step up from the Formula 3 car I have driven for the past two seasons in Europe, with much more power, more downforce, and being a larger car it is heavier and more physical to drive.”

Jenzer Motorsport boss Andreas Jenzer added: “After spending some time with our engineers on preparation work for the Valencia test, it was obvious to see
he is a professional and focused young Australian man.

“Following on from the three days test, which were held in a range of varying conditions, clearly, we can see his potential.

The 2020 FIA F3 Championship commences with three days of official testing at Bahrain in March ahead of the opening event alongside the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix later that month.
