Sebastien Bourdais has suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis and a broken right hip following his high speed crash during qualifying for the Indianapolis 500.
The Dale Coyne Racing driver was taken to Indiana University Health hospital after he slammed into the Turn 2 barriers, having just completed two laps at an average speed of 231mph.
The four-time Champ Car series winner was alert and conscious following the impact.
IndyCar’s medical director Dr. Geoffrey Billows has confirmed the Frenchman will undergo surgery on his pelvis this evening local time.
Bourdais impacted the wall with the front right corner. The car then slid along the barrier before turning upside down as the chassis skidded to a halt.
“Sebastien is in good hands here at IU Methodist Hospital with the staff and now we just wait for him to recover,” read a statement from team owner Dale Coyne.
