Lloyd claims pole as CAMS F4 breaks cover

Jordan Lloyd on his way to the first ever pole position in the CAMS Australian Formula 4 Championship

Jordan Lloyd on his way to the first ever pole position in the CAMS Australian Formula 4 Championship

Jordan Lloyd scored an historic pole position as the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship broke cover for the first time at the Castrol Edge Townsville 400.

Lloyd emerged as the star of the 13 car entry as he topped the times in both practice sessions, before lighting up the timing screens in the championship’s inaugural qualifying session.

Australia is the latest country to adopt the FIA sanctioned formula following in the footsteps of Britain, Italy, Germany, China and Japan.

The battle for pole position developed into a fight between Team BRM’s Lloyd and Dream Motorsport’s Thomas Randle, with the former coming out on top by 0.1s.

Randle had topped the session briefly before Lloyd fired in a session best 1:16.68s effort.

William Brown will line up in third alongside Australian Formula Ford runner Luis Leeds, with Nicholas Rowe fifth, who only secured a deal to race 48 hours earlier.

Drew Ridge was sixth fastest while Jimmy Vernon was seventh quickest for AGI Sport.

Team BRM’s Harry Hayek was eighth as less than a second separated the top eight.

Jordan Love will start from ninth position while Tom Grech, who came to halt in the opening practice session, completed the top 10.

Zane Goddard is set to start Race 1 from 11th despite suffering a sizeable impact with the wall at Turn 6, which triggered the red flags with four minutes remaining.

The CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship’s inaugural race will take place on Saturday at 08:35.
