Fabian Coulthard and Michael Caruso both undercut a 13-year-old practice lap record to fill the top two spots in Practice 2 at Phillip Island.
Caruso’s Nissan was the class of the field for much of the first full-field hit-out of the weekend.
The #36 Altima recorded a 1:32.04s on its first flyer to undercut Craig Lowndes’ record by 0.03s.
The time stood until Coulthard put down a 1:31.89s after the chequered flag fell. The Kiwi had earlier moved to second on his second of three runs.
Mark Winterbottom also improved in the dying seconds to end up third fastest ahead of Chaz Mostert, Lowndes, Todd Kelly, David Reynolds, Tony D’Alberto, Tim Slade and Will Davison.
Practice 1 pace-setter Scott McLaughlin could manage no better than 20th; one place behind title contender Jamie Whincup.

As usual, tyre condition largely dominated proceedings, with teams saving the best of their pre-marked tyres for the afternoon’s Practice 3 and Saturday morning’s Practice 4.
The third session will kick-off at 1420 local time.
