The American will replace Valtteri Bottas in the MAC-26 at the Hungaroring, six weeks after making his official grand prix weekend debut in Sergio Perez’s car in Barcelona.

Herta will combine the appearance with his Formula 2 commitments for Hitech as Cadillac continues to develop its car during its debut F1 campaign.

“It’s very exciting to get another chance in FP1,” Herta said.

“It’s a good opportunity for my personal experience, but the ultimate goal is, of course, to help the team with its development.

“It’s been six weeks since I was last in the car, and there’s been a lot of evolution in that time.

“My job is to help the race drivers have the best possible Hungarian Grand Prix – but also provide the feedback that will aid the team in its long-term development aims and give me a better baseline in future sessions.”

Given he drove Perez’s car in Barcelona, this upcoming outing will mean he’s driven both of the Cadillacs on grand prix weekends.

Both Bottas and Perez will still be required to sit out another practice session during the second half of the season as Cadillac completes its mandatory rookie running.

The team arrives in Hungary still searching for its first point after the opening 10 rounds, with Bottas’ 13th-place finish in China remaining its best result.

Herta will be one of five replacement drivers taking part in opening practice as teams use the final weekend before the summer break to complete their rookie obligations.

Championship leader Kimi Antonelli will hand his Mercedes to reserve driver Frederik Vesti, who previously replaced the Italian during FP1 in Barcelona.

It will complete Antonelli’s required absences for the season, although teammate George Russell is still due to miss two practice sessions after the summer break.

Oscar Piastri will also sit out for McLaren, with reigning Formula 2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli returning for his second appearance in the MCL40.

Fornaroli previously replaced Lando Norris in Barcelona and will now take over Piastri’s car as McLaren evaluates a major aerodynamic upgrade headlined by a new floor.

Paul Aron will replace Franco Colapinto at Alpine, marking the Estonian’s third FP1 appearance of the season after previous outings on loan with Audi in Barcelona and Austria.

Haas will complete the group of five teams making changes, with reserve Ryo Hirakawa taking over Oliver Bearman’s car for the 60-minute session.
