Series leader Bryce Fullwood has broken the Dunlop Super2 practice record in topping Practice 2 for Round 6 at Sandown.
The MW Motorsport driver and Practice 1 pace-setter Jordan Boys both bettered the previous practice/qualifying benchmark of 1:08.5820s which was established by then-MWM driver Garry Jacobson driver last year.
Fullwood finished with a 1:08.2230s during what appeared to be Armor All Qualifying simulations in the five minutes which remained after a red flag, while Boys took the #49 Image Racing VF Commodore to a personal best 1:08.4389s.
Zane Goddard made it two MWM Altimas in the top three while Thomas Randle (#5 Tickford FGX Falcon), who moved to second in the series with the win last time out at Mount Panorama, ended up sixth in a session run under sunny skies.
Boys and Randle had been fighting amongst themselves for top spot until Fullwood gradually worked his way to a 1:08.9454s in 13th minute in the #16 Altima.
The Darwin driver went fastest to the second sector two laps later, despite being seven laps into what was already his second run, but came up just short of an improvement at the control line.
Fullwood pressed on with the run for a total of 15 laps, seven short of the scheduled distance for each of this weekend’s races, during which time Randle moved back ahead of Boys and into second position with a 1:08.9885s.
Jack Smith (Brad Jones Racing) had risen to fourth by the time he pinched a brake on the #21 VF Commodore at Dandenong Road and got stuck in the kitty litter, drawing another red flag after the two he had caused in Practice 1.
There was a flurry of fast laps once the 40-minute session restarted with just under five laps to go, led by Fullwood initially with a 1:08.4552s.
He set the 1:08.2230s on his next lap and was fastest to the second sector on his third flyer of the run, which took him to the chequered flag.
Boys also twice improved in the quick burst to the finish of the session, while Goddard took Car #28 from seventh to third with his final lap.
Kurt Kostecki was thereabouts for much of the session despite an early off at Dandenong Road, which he drove out of, and was ultimately fourth in the #55 Triple Eight VF Commodore, ahead of Dylan O’Keeffe (#44 Garry Rogers Motorsport VF Commodore).
Randle lost a 1:08.7032s for a breach of track limits before putting in a 1:08.8552s at the end.
The top 10 was rounded out by Brenton Grove (#10 Triple Eight VF Commodore), Will Brown (#38 Eggleston Motorsport VF Commodore), Adam Marjoram (#15 Image Racing VF Commodore), and Smith.
Armor All Qualifying for Race 1 of the weekend starts tomorrow at 1155 local time/AEDT.
