Jeff Gordon has taken his first win of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season with victory at the Goody’s Headache Relief Shot 500 powered by Kroger at Martinsville Speedway.
A late race pass on Matt Kenseth brought his eighth victory on the flat half-mile track and his career total now sits at 88 wins.
Gordon led a total of 78 laps, but it was his move at lap 480 when Kenseth caught lapped traffic, the Toyota driver had led the previous 105 laps.
Kenseth kept his hold on second place, despite a spirited battle with Clint Bowyer on the final lap, and also earned a critical bonus point for leading the most laps (200). That result, combined with Jimmie Johnson’s fifth-place finish, means those two are tied atop the standings with three races remaining (Kenseth owns the tiebreaker).
Other Chase drivers finishing in the top 10 were Kevin Harvick (sixth), Dale Earnhardt Jr. (eighth) and Greg Biffle (ninth).
Coors Light Pole winner Denny Hamlin took seventh while last week’s winner Jamie McMurray was 10th.
Australia’s Marcos Ambrose got through the Martinsville ‘Paperclip’ in 19th.
