Green light for full Winton resurface

Winton Motor Raceway will be fully resurfaced over the summer

Winton Motor Raceway will be fully resurfaced over the summer

Work is set to commence on a full resurface of Winton Motor Raceway following confirmation of $1 million in Victorian government funding.

The news was announced at the circuit today by Member for Northern Victoria, Jaclyn Symes and Benalla Auto Club Group CEO Chris Lewis-Williams.

The resurface of the 3km venue will be completed in February and be accompanied by a raft of safety upgrades.

It is claimed that the project will inject $3.35 million into the local economy and create more than 25 jobs.

Symes and Lewis-Williams both stressed that the works are vital to keeping the V8 Supercars at the venue.

The current contract between Winton and the category runs out after next year’s May 20-22 fixture.

Take the short survey.

Winton first hosted the Australian Touring Car Championship in 1985 and has since missed out on an event on just three occasions (1987, 1996 and 2005).

“This investment and track upgrade will ensure that Winton Motor Raceway remains country Victoria’s premier race venue and continues to host international events such as the V8 Supercars Championship and Australian Superbikes Championship,” said Symes.

Lewis-Williams added that the works will be undertaken “using some of the most highly-regarded engineers and technology in the field”.

Three corners of the circuit were resurfaced ahead of this year’s V8 Supercars event after faulty crack sealant wreaked havoc in 2014.

“The resurface works are not a cheap exercise, but they are vital to ensure we can continue to hold major national race meetings, such as the V8 Supercars Championship,” he said.

“One of the best things about the project is that the benefits will also be enjoyed by all the other patrons who use Winton, including those who race in the state and club-level race meetings that have been the foundation of the Benalla Auto Club for so many years.

“Today’s announcement displays the Victorian State Government’s recognition of Winton’s importance to regional Victoria, and a really strong endorsement of its continued growth and development.”
