The crash happened during qualifying for the infamous motorcycle race, which was one of two incidents that led to Sidecar racing being axed from the event’s program.
A fundraiser has since been set up on Costello’s behalf via GoFundMe.
Costello was left paralysed from the chest down, with fractures to her T5 and T6 vertebrae.
She also has a large liver laceration and cuts between her eyes as well as fractures to an arm, multiple ribs, her sternum, nose and an eye socket.
Event organisers issued a statement on Tuesday.
“Maria Costello MBE sustained serious injuries following an incident at the approach to Brandish during the first qualifying session of the 2026 Isle of Man TT Races on Tuesday evening,” organisers said.

“Maria was initially taken to Noble’s Hospital by Airmed for assessment and treatment before subsequently being transferred to Walton Hospital, where she remains under specialist care.
“Maria’s condition is reported as serious but stable. She has sustained spinal injuries and continues to receive treatment.
“We continue to communicate with and support Maria, her family and team at this time.
“The thoughts of everyone at the Isle of Man TT Races are with Maria, her family, friends and team.”
At the time of publication, more than £86,000 ($150,000 AUD) has been raised via 2400 donations.
The GoFundMe has set a £200,000 ($375,000 AUD) target to help with Costello’s rehabilitation.
“Maria will need specialist help with physio care and perhaps surgeries to hopefully help Maria regain use of her legs,” the GoFundMe page reads.
“One thing that is clear from Maria’s injuries is that this will have a lifelong impact on her, not just preventing and affecting a return to sport but impacting Maria’s every day life.
“Maria will need to adapt almost all aspects of her life. After a life of giving everything to a sport she loves, she will now turn that determination to recovery and recuperation.
“From the initial determination of her injuries it is already clear that Maria will need to move house or make house alterations, with accessibility adjustments needed wherever she is based.
“She will need an adapted bed, shower, kitchen, stairlift and specialist vehicle for transport.
“Maria will need further surgery over the coming weeks and months and require specialist rehab and physio support.”
Costello’s celebrated her 30th anniversary racing at the Isle of Man with a special helmet. This year was to be her 18th start.
She was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in 2009 for services to motorcycling.
