Keselowski claims Richmond pole

Keselowski takes his fourth pole of 2014

Brad Keselowski has scored pole for the Federated Auto Parts 400 at Richmond International Raceway, a race that is set to see plenty of drivers put it on the line to make the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

With the 400 lap encounter at Richmond being the final race before the Chase for the Sprint Cup, plenty of attention is on any driver that has not won so far this year. A victory to drivers who contest the entire season will make the Chase and therefore be in the running to win the title. The only exception to this rule is Tony Stewart, who missed two races following the Sprintcar incident he was involved in which killed Kevin Ward Jr.

Flash flooding in the pit/paddock prior to qualifying

Prior to qualifying a massive storm flash-flooded the pit/paddock area. However, it quickly subsided and qualifying was held in hot/steamy conditions.

The Penske Fords have been strong throughout qualifying in 2014 with Keselowski collecting his fourth pole and only seventh of his career.

“The car is really fast, that’s what makes the difference,” said Keselowski.

“You have to have a little luck and we had a big cloud cover there for a few minutes. I’m surprised no one else took advantage of it.

“We could win the 400th for the Captain (team owner Roger Penske). Boy, would I love to get that. … We’d like to get a win in us before we enter the Chase and have the top seed outright.”

He will share the front row with Jeff Gordon, while Jimmie Johnson will start on the second row alongside Kevin Harvick. The other Team Penske entry of Joey Logano will start fifth.

Marcos Ambrose will start from 33rd after he said he lacked grip in his Richard Petty Motorsports Ford. The Australian turned-in a total of nine qualifying laps, with his opening tour being the best of his runs.

With the majority of the race being run after the sun sets, Ambrose will be looking to make sure his car will be best for those cooler track temperatures.
