James Moffat has converted his pole position into victory in the first Fujitsu V8 Supercar race at Sydney Olympic Park today.
While Moffat took the chequered flag first in the incident-packed race, Jonathon Webb crossed the line with the biggest smile having wrapped up the series with one race to spare.
Webb, driving the #26 Gulf Western Oils Falcon, shadowed Moffat for the entire 22 laps, finishing second and doing enough to clinch his first V8 crown.
The title would have gone down to the wire tomorrow, however, with only a handful of laps to go, series rival David Russell (Howard Racing Falcon), struck steering troubles and limped back to pit lane.
As they say in the classics – ‘Game Over.’
Grant Denyer took third place ahead of V8-returnee Marcus Marshall.
David Sieders put in an impressive drive to take fifth place (his best result in the category) ahead of Geoff Emery, Drew Russell, Rodney Jane, debutant James Winslow and Colin Corkery.
The race actually finished under Safety Car conditions when Damien Assaillit crashed heavily at the turn five Etihad Sweeper
The race started with a bang when Brad Lowe, Ben Egglestone and Sam Walter were all caught up in a low-speed accident at the XXXX Gold Chicane.
Tomorrow’s final race of the 2009 Fujitsu V8 Series starts at 11.50am.
