A tarmac rally for classic cars will return to the Adelaide Hills in 2011, with the announcement of the Classic Targa Adelaide.
Promoted by global sports and event marketing group Octogon, the new event replaces the Classic Adelaide Rally, which was held for 12 years before running into financial difficulties last year.
The inaugural Classic Targa Adelaide will take place between September 15 and 18, and will form part of the Australian Targa Championship, which also includes the Targa Wrest Point, Targa Tasmania and Targa High Country rallies.
Tourism Minister John Rau believes that the Classic Targa Adelaide will add to South Australia's strong line-up of sporting events.
“South Australia has an excellent track record for staging major events, including an ever-growing line-up of sporting events such as the Santos Tour Down Under and the Clipsal 500 Adelaide,'' said Rau.
“I am proud to say we can now include the Classic Targa Adelaide on our exciting calendar of events.
”Events like this are a great addition to South Australia's tourism offering.
“They provide valuable media coverage, attract participants to the State from interstate and overseas and provide a great spectacle for the public, whether they are from Australia or overseas.''
A course for the rally has yet to be finalised, but there are plans to incorporate Adelaide and regions including the Adelaide Hills, Barossa and the Fleurieu Peninsula.
