New F1 rules to be introduced in 2019

Formula 1 is set to introduce a number of new rules ahead of the 2019 season following a meeting of F1 stakeholders in Paris on Tuesday.

The meeting discussed a number of measures that will be introduced next year, along with power unit regulations for the post-2020 era.

Between the Formula 1 Strategy Group and Formula 1 Commission, three amendments to the regulations are set to be introduced next season.

Teams will receive an additional fuel allowance for the race, from 105kg to 110kg, designed to allow drivers to run higher engine modes more regularly.

A driver’s weight will also be considered separately to the car.

Previously a driver’s weight has been added to the car to calculate minimum weight, resulting in pressure to reduce a driver’s weight.

Finally, biometric gloves gloves will be introduced in an effort to improve safety and medical responses in the instance of a crash.

The gloves have been tested a number of times, including by Daniel Ricciardo, and were initially set to be introduced this season.

During the meeting the FIA presented proposals for power unit regulations for 2021.

The proposals see, fundamentally, the current 1.6-litre V6 turbo engine remain, though without the MGU-H energy recovery system.

Following the meeting the FIA’s technical department has until the end of May to meet with engine manufacturers, both current and prospective, before finalising the regulations.
