Reigning NZ V8 Ute Champion Andrew Waite will drive alongside Daniel Gaunt in Tasman Motorsports’ entry at the upcoming V8 SuperTourer Series endurance races.
Waite has an extensive background in open-wheel racing having having previously competed locally in Formula Ford and the Toyota Racing Series, in addition to several Australian Formula 3 outings.
Tasman joined the first-year class in time for its most recent round at Hampton Downs, where Gaunt took a best finish of eighth.
Team principal Steve Horne says that he rates Waite’s talents highly.
“Andrew is fast and is a proven winner in everything he’s raced in, with victories in everything from Karts, to the Toyota Racing Series to the V8 Utes, he’s demonstrated that he has all the right attributes,” said Horne.
“The whole team is gelling really well and Andrew will fit in perfectly. We’ll be aiming to get both him and Daniel at least one days full testing before we hit the track at Taupo in September.”
Aware of the team’s racing past – which included a stint in the CART World Series – the 23-year-old Waite says he’s excited to join its driver line-up.
“Every young racer knows who Steve is and what he has achieved overseas, and which drivers he has helped in their careers, to get some experience in this kind of environment is fantastic,” said Waite.
“I’ve heard and seen so much about these cars this year, and these next three events are going to be massive. I can’t wait until we get to Taupo.”
Dubbed the Fathers Day 400, the Taupo event will feature a pair of 200km races separated by a short service interval.
