Brian Vickers might only run a part time schedule in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, but it didn’t stop him from showing the way at the Camping World RV Sales 301 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Vickers, who shares the ride in the #55 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota with amongst others Mark Martin, took victory in a green-white-chequered flag finish, from Kyle Busch and Jeff Burton.
The third victory of Vickers’ career was his first since August 2009 as points leader Jimmie Johnson recovered from having to start last after a technical infringement in qualifying to finish in sixth.
Tony Stewart led 84 laps but ran out of fuel on the next-to-last circuit and finished 26th.
Marcos Ambrose had his hopes end just 14 laps into the race when Kevin Harvick spun the Australian while battling for 20th. Ambrose suffered heavy damage as he was collected by Casey Mears and went on to finish 33rd, some 35 laps down after his crew repaired the damage back in the garage.
His team-mate Aric Almirola went on to finish fifth.
